About Shaina

I’ve been playing piano since I was seven years old. I earned my bachelor’s degree in piano from Westminster Choir College and have about 20 years of teaching experience, with students from elementary age through adults, beginner through advanced. I’ve performed at venues like Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Kimmel Center, and I’m a professional accompanist for ensembles and soloists in many different styles.

My teaching is very student-centered and built around each student’s goals. I aim to give students a solid foundation so they can reach those goals. Some of my students have gone on to play in local bands, perform in recitals, compose their own music and become music majors in college.

How I got started

I was always listening to music and singing. Whenever we passed the player pianos at the mall, I wanted to run over and play them. I begged for lessons and finally started at seven, and I’ve been playing nonstop ever since!

What I love to play

I’m classically trained, but I also love rock, new age, pop and alternative. I like to play just about anything.

My advice for beginners

Enjoy the process! Learning music is like learning a new language, and it takes time and dedication. Once you get through the hard part, the work pays off and you’ll be able to play whatever you love for the rest of your life.

A favorite teaching moment

When a student finds a piece they love and doesn’t want to stop playing it. It’s also so rewarding to see a student finally play a bucket-list piece they’ve always wanted to learn.

An obstacle I overcame

I struggled with performance anxiety when I was younger. What worked for me was practicing a piece until I had it down cold, practicing performing, and then simply performing more. It gave me the confidence to stop worrying about perfection and just be myself for the audience.

What’s next for me

I want to keep teaching and inspiring students on their own musical journeys, keep performing in lots of different settings, and compose more music that I hope to share someday.
