Patrice Earle

When did you start playing music, what brought you to it?

I started playing piano when I was a kid, and I inherited my great-grandfather's piano.

What other instruments, aside from the ones you teach, have you played before?

Aside from guitar, bass, & drums, I code and program my own digital music devices using Max/MSP.

What style(s) of music do you like to play the most? Why?

My main genres are classical, electroacoustic, and folk.

What is a musical obstacle that you remember overcoming? How did you overcome it?

My most persistent obstacle is confidence. Though it is perpetual, I tell myself: look how far I've come, if I can handle the past, then I'll handle the future just as well.

What are some of your favorite teaching moments?

The best moment in teaching is when a student comes into the lesson and, without even being prompted, tells me everything they worked on and how well it went. That shows me their determination.

What are some musical goals you hope to achieve?

Next year, I will be releasing my first album of pieces for solo piano.

What advice could you give to someone who has just begun learning music?

My advice is: patience is a virtue. Set personal goals for yourself. Trust the process and enjoy your journey.
